Dr. Lex McKenna
Dr. McKenna is a proud Santa Barbara native whose lifelong dedication to animal care has shaped every step of her professional journey. Her path in veterinary medicine began with a bold decision to study abroad, leading her to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she earned her veterinary degree in 2001 from the esteemed Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine. Known worldwide for its exceptional clinical training and academic rigor, the program provided her with a strong foundation in both the science and art of veterinary care.
After graduating, she returned to her hometown of Santa Barbara, where she has continued to serve the local community with unwavering commitment for more than two decades. Over the years, she has become widely respected for her compassionate bedside manner, her ability to connect deeply with both animals and their families, and her dedication to providing thorough, individualized care. Her experience spans a broad range of clinical settings, giving her a comprehensive understanding of both routine wellness and complex medical needs.
In 2016, inspired by a desire to make veterinary services more accessible and less stressful for pets, Dr. McKenna founded her own mobile veterinary practice from the ground up. This innovative endeavor allowed her to bring high-quality medical care directly into the homes of her clients—an approach especially beneficial for elderly pets, anxious animals, and busy families. Her mobile practice quickly became known for its convenience, comfort, and patient-centered focus.
Today, Dr. McKenna serves as the medical director at Montecito Pet Hospital, where she continues to elevate patient care through leadership, mentorship, and her commitment to advancing veterinary medicine. In addition to her veterinary degree, she holds certifications in both veterinary acupuncture and chiropractic care. These complementary modalities allow her to take a holistic and integrative approach to wellness—addressing mobility issues, chronic pain, and overall balance by combining traditional medicine with therapeutic techniques that support the whole animal.
Outside of her professional work, Dr. McKenna enjoys a rich and active life with her husband and their two dogs. A devoted equestrian, she spends much of her free time training and competing in the highly disciplined sport of dressage. Her dedication to horsemanship reflects the same qualities she brings to her veterinary work: precision, patience, empathy, and a profound respect for the animals in her care.
